wSmartGas® Technology
Overview
wSmartGas® is a proprietary EtCO₂ measurement technology integrated into both mainstream (CapnoSET®) and micro-side stream (TiniStream®) modules. With features such as a micro- dead space design, it enables accurate, real-time monitoring across adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients in emergency and critical care settings.Through ongoing clinical use and continuous technological refinement, wSmartGas® delivers reliable, high-performance respiratory monitoring tailored to diverse clinical needs.
EtCO₂ Measurement Principle
wSmartGas® utilizes non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy to measure end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO₂). The system operates by emitting infrared light through a gas sampling chamber. CO₂ molecules present in the sample gas absorb infrared radiation at a characteristic wavelength of 4.26 µm, which corresponds to a strong absorption peak in the CO₂ infrared spectrum.
w
As the infrared light passes through the chamber, CO₂ molecules absorb part of the light energy. This absorption is proportional to the CO₂ concentration and is detected by an infrared sensor positioned opposite the emitter. The detector converts the absorbed optical signal into an electrical signal, allowing the system to calculate critical respiratory parameters in real time, including:
• EtCO₂:CO₂ concentration or partial pressure at the end of exhalation (point B on the capnogram).
• FiCO₂:CO₂ concentration or partial pressure at the beginning of inhalation (point A).
• AwRR:Airway respiratory rate, calculated as the time interval between points A and C.
The resulting waveform, known as the capnogram, provides continuous, real-time insight into the patient’s ventilatory status and is a key tool in emergency and critical care settings.

Key Advantages
wSmartGas® Technology — Precision in Respiratory Monitoring
wSmartGas® delivers high-accuracy EtCO₂ measurement through advanced interference detection and adaptive compensation algorithms. It adjusts for environmental variables such as temperature, pressure, and humidity, and minimizes cross-sensitivity to anesthetic gases, nitrous oxide, and oxygen.Proven in clinical settings—including in-hospital transport and emergency care—wSmartGas® enhances monitoring reliability and supports improved patient safety. The figure below highlights its performance advantages in critical applications.

Rapid Response Technology in EtCO₂ Monitoring
wSmartGas® rapid response technology integrates CapnoSET® (mainstream) and TiniStream® (sidestream) measurement systems to deliver immediate, plug-and-play EtCO₂ monitoring without warm-up delay. This is achieved through sample gas preconditioning and adaptive compensation, reducing the risk of clinical misuse and enhancing workflow efficiency. To address the impact of saturated water vapor in exhaled gas, CapnoSET® applies optical path optimization to prevent infrared light scattering caused by condensation within the measurement chamber—ensuring reliable readings even at low ambient temperatures. For sidestream systems, TiniStream® incorporates effective condensate filtration, improving both measurement accuracy and system responsiveness while extending sampling line lifespan.
